Marcess Owings
Photography has long been a part of Marcess' life. As a child, her mother used to take pictures of her to make her stop crying. Shortly after, Marcess discovered the other side of the camera and the obsession with picture taking began. Although Marcess prefers to shoot black and white film, there are some instances where she chooses digital. Most of her experience lies in portraiture, ranging from abstract nudes to engagement photos.
Marcess earned her Associate in Arts in Photography from Chabot College in 2004. She is also a recent graduate of the History of Art program at the University of California, Berkeley. Marcess was a finalist in the 2004 Best of College Photography, a contest and publication by Photographer's Forum Magazine.
Currently, Marcess is enjoying life after college by savoring every chance she gets to sleep in and by making the most of her Netflix subscription. She also volunteers her free time as a teacher's aid at Chabot College to help other photography students. Her numerous artistic heroes include Man Ray, Cindy Sherman, Chuck Close, and Andy Warhol.
"And what's with the squirrel thing?"
To that, Marcess says, "WHY NOT?" While some people consider squirrels "rats with furry tails," Marcess believes these tiny beasts are quite cute and gentle. Marcess has a long history of sharing her lunch with outgoing squirrels. Although she cannot quite say that squirrels are her most favorite mammal,
she has been known to claim that they have a special place in her heart. Her most favorite squirrels live on the Berkeley campus, particularly behind Stephens Hall. If you visit them, they like grapes, cashews, pistachios, and Coco Puffs.
